Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep, is a meditation and conscious relaxation practice that brings about total physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. In yoga nidra, you are gently guided through four main stages of brain wave activity to hover between the waking and sleeping state of consciousness, the most restorative state for the mind and body. Studies have shown that yoga nidra reduces tension and anxiety, eases insomnia, heightens awareness and focus and fosters feelings of peace, calmness and clarity.
For this practice, you want to make yourself as comfortable as possible while lying down instead of remaining in a seated position. You may want to lay on a yoga mat with a pillow or bolster under your knees for support and have a light blanket to cover yourself.
